Some proofs for the prohibition of singing

<blockquote>Question :</blockquote><blockquote>Is there any Daleel to say that singing is Haram ?</blockquote> <h3>Answer :</h3>بسم الله الرحمان الرحيم والصلاة والسلام على خاتم الأبياء أما بعد The evidences for the prohibition of singing in the Kitaab , the Sunnah and the ways of the Salaf is abundant enough to support the fact that singing is prohibited. Some of the evidences are as follows: In Surat al Luqman, Allah عز وجل says : وَمِنَ النَّاسِ مَن يَشْتَرِي لَهْوَ الْحَدِيثِ لِيُضِلَّ عَن سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ بِغَيْرِ عِلْمٍ وَيَتَّخِذَهَا هُزُوًا ۚ أُولَٰئِكَ لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ مُّهِينٌAnd of mankind is he who purchases idle talks (i.e. music, singing, etc.) to mislead (men) from the Path of Allah without knowledge, and takes it (the Path of Allah, the Verses of the Qur’an) by way of mockery. For such there will be a humiliating torment (in the Hell-Fire). (Quran 31:6) Ibn Masood رضي الله عنه said in the Tafseer (exegesis) of this verse “ I swear by the One other than Whom none deserve to be worshipped that it refers to Al Ghinaa (singing) ” and he repeated this three times. Ibn Abbas رضي الله عنه said it refers to ‘singing and the like ’ while Jaabir رضي الله عنه has been reported to view its meaning to signify singing and listening to songs. Many Tabi’een such as Mujaahid , Ikrimah , Makhool and Umar ibn Shu’ayb رحمهم الله viewed it as a condemnation against music and songs . In the Sunnah , our Prophet صلى الله عليه said that some of his followers are going to make singing lawful (Halal) when it is actually forbidden (Haram) and the Hadith is as follows: سَمِعَ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَقُولُ ‏ "‏ لَيَكُونَنَّ مِنْ أُمَّتِي أَقْوَامٌ يَسْتَحِلُّونَ الْحِرَ وَالْحَرِيرَ وَالْخَمْرَ وَالْمَعَازِفَ، . رواه البخاري Narrated Abu Malik Al-Ash’ari that he heard the Prophet salallahu alayhi wasallam saying: “From among my followers there will be some people who will consider illegal sexual intercourse, the wearing of silk, the drinking of alcoholic drinks, and the use of musical instruments as lawful " (Sahih al Bukhari) And Allah عز وجل knows best .

Attending functions of non Muslims

The difference between Samaa ( listening ) and Istimaa ( ask , like or accept listening )

<blockquote>Question : </blockquote><blockquote>Sometimes I go into a market , shop or a car and in it I hear the forbidden singing. So is it permissible for me to buy from that shop or ride in that car , or do I have to leave immediately ?</blockquote> <h3>Answer :</h3> وعليكم السلام ورحمة الله وبركاته <h3>Firstly :</h3> If you are able to change and forbid that evil which is the forbidden music , then do it , even with advice or guidance etc. as how the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said ( Whosoever of you sees an evil, let him change it with his hand; and if he is not able to do so, then [let him change it] with his tongue; and if he is not able to do so, then with his heart — and that is the weakest of faith. ) <h3>Secondly :</h3> If you see such a change is difficult for you to apply due a certain reasons , then you must still hate it in your heart and wish that evil ceases because you are not satisfied with it , and this is the minimum level of faith you should have towards that evil as menioned in the previous hadith. <h3>Thirdly :</h3> After all that , there is nothing wrong with you taking what you need from that shop and its like , then leaving if you have finished your need since the sound of singing and music there will not harm your heart and faith إن شاء الله , because you did not ask for it and also your heart did not accept it. And the scholars differentiate between merely listening ( سماع ) and accepting to listen ( استماع ) to that which is forbidden , because the ears may perceive sounds that a person does not like or accept , therefore there is no effect on the soul from that listening . There is an effect on the soul only if he listens to that whilst seeking and intending it . And here is the text of Ibn Taymiyyah , may Allah عز وجل have mercy on him, regarding the difference between those two from al-Majmoo’. He said : Indeed praise or blame occurs only upon Istimaa ( intending to listen ) and not upon Samaa ( merely listening ) . Therefore the one who listens to the Quran with intention is rewarded and the one who merely listens to the Quran without any intention is not rewarded because actions are only by way of intentions . Similarly , if the person listens to that which is forbidden from amusements without any intention then it will not harm him. And Allah عز وجل knows best .

A Household where it is very difficult to avoid music 

Firstly ,  I advise the questioner to look for another accommodation in which he will find comfort with good companions that will help him in doing good deeds . Secondly , if he is not able due to special circumstances , then he relieves himself of that environment by staying in the mosque in his spare time and reading and studying in it , and he does not return to that residence except to sleep and relax his body and for other needs. Thirdly , if  he is not able to do that as well then we say " Allah does not burden anyone beyond his capacity " and the scholars have differentiated 
 between hearing the forbidden things and seeking to listen to it because hearing what ever passes through your ear is not due to your choice in most of the times. So strive for good as much as you can in that place and strive to do Inkaar (denying, speaking against) of the evil according to the levels and orders of doing Inkaar ( ترتيب درجات الإنكار ) as much as you can. May Allah عز وجل aid you.
