Is saying the Salam shortly upon the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم enough to get reward ?

Is giving Salaam before asking a question innovation 

وعليكم السلام ورحمة الله وبركاته

No , it is not an innovation rather it is not even a mistake. But if you are sitting with a teacher and you have already given him the Salaam in the beginning and then you want to ask him a question  in this case we say there is no need to say Salaam to him again . Also judging such a thing as innovation is an evidence of an incorrect understanding of the word " innovation " .
