This is a wrong advise regarding this problem and it is a very dangerous advice for an individual and for the society as well, because it generalizes that which is supposed explained in detail and so it will plunge you into falsehood from where you realise it not.
Yes extremism , fanaticism and blind following are among the causes of mental disturbance and spiritual anxiety , because they will give rise to unanswerable questions and confusions and contradictions in one's way and methodology not to mention that which surrounds these destructive intellectual ideologies from intellectual terrorism .
However , true knowledge based on justice , fairness , and giving everyone and everything its due right , nothing rises out of it except peace of mind , expansiveness of heart , steadfastness upon the truth and being content with it. This is why Allah عز وجل has ordered us to learn from the scholars who act with justice and fairness and that is when He mentioned their testimony for His Oneness along with His own testimony for His Oneness and He called them as the ones having knowledge along with justice شَهِدَ اللّهُ أَنَّهُ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ هُوَ وَالْمَلاَئِكَةُ وَأُوْلُواْ الْعِلْمِ قَآئِمَاً بِالْقِسْطِ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ هُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الْحَكِيمُ Allah bears witness that La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), and the angels, and those having knowledge (also give this witness); maintaining His creation in Justice.
Also Allah عز وجل forbade from sitting with those who are known for confusions , contradictions , ignorance and alienation from the truth for the sake of achieving world objectives such as fame , money , followers etc. like when he censures Bala'am bin Ba’awra or Ibn Aber :
And recite (O Muhammad SAW) to them the story of him to whom We gave Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.), but he threw them away, so Shaitan (Satan) followed him up, and he became of those who went astray.
And had We willed, We would surely have elevated him therewith but he clung to the earth and followed his own vain desire. So his description is the description of a dog: if you drive him away, he lolls his tongue out, or if you leave him alone, he (still) lolls his tongue out.
Such is the description of the people who reject Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.). So relate the stories, perhaps they may reflect.
So you have to take the authentic knowledge from the authentic people , so through them you will receive the healing for the heart and reassurance for the soul and you should not sit with those who have a lot of contradictions and confusions in knowledge and action. The truth is clear , apparent and easy to be acted upon , and falsehood is dark , turbulent , and convulsive.
Therefore searching for guidance and calmness of the heart can only be achieved by searching for the truth that are free from confusions and contradictions.
