Question
I have some doubts regarding eating non veg foods . Firstly , is it permissible to eat alligator or crocodile meat ? I read that Shaykh Ibn Uthaymeen (may Allah have mercy on him) gave fatwa permitting alligator or crocodile meat. Is it true ? Secondly , is it permissible to eat elephant and hippopotamus' meat as they are herbivores. Thirdly, is it permissible to eat winged termites since in my country some non Muslims are eating it but our Muslim don't have that habit.
Text Answer
وعليكم سلام ورحمة الله وبركاته No it is not permissible to eat alligators and crocodiles according to the correct opinion which is the opinion of the majority of the Ulemah , because they are considered among the animals that live in the land and also they use their fangs to attack and eat. And Shayk Ibn Uthaymeen رحمه الله did see it permissible to eat them and it is also a famous opinion from a lot of scholars and it is because they consider them as Aquatic animals . As for elephants and hippopotamus it is permissible to eat them since they are herbivores. As for winged termites , you are not allowed to eat them since they are bugs.
